We've been so busy lately that we haven't had time to tell you about our involvement in the Aids Walk Atlanta & 5K Run a few weeks back.
On Sunday, October 21st this great annual event was held in Atlanta to raise money for AIDS Service Organizations throughout the metro-Atlanta area. In it's 22nd year of fundraising, the event continues to help raise much needed money to help provide essential programs and services for men, women and children who are infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS. Last year's fundraisers managed to collect a huge $1,000,000 during the campaign!
This year two members of the 3B Scientific team, based at our office in Atlanta, took part in the 5K run which is held in Piedmont Park.
Marketing Coordinator, Anna Wittig and Joseph Allen, our Senior Graphic Designer, pulled on their running shorts, laced up their trainers and helped to raise money for this very worthy cause.
HIV/AIDS has only been in the public conscience since 1981 and, whilst initially it took scientists by surprise, much has been done to help educate and support people likely to be affected as well as those already living with the disease. The first ever AIDS case was recorded in the United States with other cases quickly being reported in 7 other countries: Australia, Canada, France, The Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
The stigma of HIV/AIDS and it's spread around the world continues to be an ongoing concern. Education is vitally important to ensure that people have the correct facts available and not rely on urban myths that spread fear and mistrust.
The U.S. has consistently been the largest donor to global AIDS efforts since the emergence of the epidemic in 1981. The UK, Netherlands and Sweden were the largest donors in 2011 measured in per capita terms. However, with the continued global financial crisis, that started in 2008, it has been harder to maintain these donation levels.
Ongoing research continues to raise hope that significant new treatments and even a cure may one day be found for HIV/AIDS. In the meantime, events such as the Aids Walk Atlanta & 5K Run remain an important opportunity to continue to educate and raise vital funds to eradicate fear and suffering.
We'd like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the runners and fundraisers involved in the Aids Walk Atlanta & 5K Run and especially our two gallant runners Joseph & Anna - Well Done!
