How Natural Are Your Massage Therapy Oils & Creams?

Hand dermatitis is an occupational hazard
in the Massage & Physical Therapy world.
It’s also known as Hand Eczema and it’s symptoms include rashes,
redness, dryness, itching and soreness.  The
conditions can be exacerbated by frequent hand washing and contact with
aromatherapy oils and lotions.

How common is Hand Eczema amongst therapists and what products can you use that won't irritate the condition?

A clinical study of 350 Philadelphia
Massage Therapists found that 23% had suffered with hand dermatitis during the
preceding 12 months.  In addition to
frequent hand washing, fragrances, dyes, detergents, latex and other chemicals
were to blame.

However, over recent years, Therapists are
moving away from using synthetic oils and frequently prefer more natural
lubricant choices.  Speciality oils that
have become popular include grapeseed oil, sweet almond oil, avocado oil and
apricot kernel oil.  Many of these
natural oils have long been used by Europeans as they provide
excellent glide and increased emollient benefits to the skin.

FACT: Sweet Almond Oil is often thought to
be derived from nuts. In fact, the almond belongs to the same family that contains apricots, peaches and plums. The fruit of the almond (Prunus amygdalus) is called a drupe and isn't a true nut at all. It consists of an outer hull and a hard shell with the seed inside. During it’s transformation into oil, it's
refined and proteins are removed.  It’s
these proteins that are the cause of allergic reactins in peanut or nut oils
like walnut.

If you've ever wondered what cold compressed oils are, these popular oils are produced to ensure
the highest content of vitamins and minerals will nourish, smoothe & soften
the skin. They are produced through natural forms of pressing and grinding (i.e. millstones) at low temperatures to retain all their beneficial qualities, unlike large scale solvent extraction and refining techniques which strip oils of their natural antioxidants and healing properties.

TIP: Rice Bran Oil, originally from Japan,
is especially good for people suffering with eczema, psoriasis and
dermatitis.  It’s a very gentle and mild
oil full of antioxidants such as Vitamin E, Linoleic Acid, Palmitic
Acid and Oryzanol.  In Japan, Rice Bran Oil is used as both a skin and hair beauty enhancer.
