For patients recovering from traumatic brain injuries or Stroke, being able to exercise can be extremely difficult and frustrating.  Developing stronger muscles and better co-ordination is imperative in regaining function, mobility and overall better health.

When the FDA approved a weightless training system, first used with returning Astronauts from Space, it proved an enormous hit within mainstream Physical Therapy.  

 

 


The device supports the patient's body weight on a cushion of air.  It enables a wide variety of patients, previously unable to exercise, to move more freely.  

The system can be used for

  • Pre-surgery strengthening
  • Obese patients who have difficulty moving 
  • Those suffering with joint stiffness
  • Patients recovering from stroke or TBI.

In addition to improving joint suppleness, muscle strength and general cardiovascular conditioning, mental stimulation tasks can also be added to the patient's workout. Developing stronger neural pathways and challenging the brain to learn and maintain multiple functions has proved enormously helpful for patients hoping to regain fine motor skills.

Physical Therapists are able to fully support a comprehensive rehabilitation program by incorporating strength conditioning slowly and at a pace that the patient feels comfortable with.  Starting at a reduced level of effort with body weight support allows for a level of exercise that wouldn't ordinarily be possible.  As muscles begin to work and limbs become freer the brain also becomes stronger and more capable of controlling movement.

There are many different types of exercise and rehabilitation products and techniques available.  Physical Therapists can offer a wide variety of treatments but without patient commitment progress will always falter.  Ensuring that the patient remains motivated and focused on their goals is every bit as important as devising a coherent strategy for recovery.
